Introduction to Japanese Woodblock Printing (Mokuhanga) – Evening Course

Join Kernow Mokuhanga Studios for a six-week evening course exploring the beautiful and meditative art of mokuhanga – traditional Japanese woodblock printing. This technique, known for its use of water-based pigments, handmade paper, and hand-printing without a press, allows for subtle layering, rich textures, and a uniquely personal approach to printmaking.

Over six evenings (6pm–9pm), you will be introduced to the core techniques of mokuhanga including:

  • Designing and transferring images to woodblocks

  • Safe and effective carving methods

  • Mixing natural pigments and preparing rice paste

  • Printing by hand using traditional brushes and the baren

  • Registration methods for multi-block colour printing

No previous experience is required – this course is designed for complete beginners as well as those with some printmaking background who are new to Japanese methods. By the end of the course, you’ll have created your own small edition of prints and gained a solid foundation in this versatile and accessible technique.

All materials and tools are provided. Expect a friendly, supportive environment with demonstrations, individual guidance, and time to develop your own creative ideas.
