A contemporary take on the centuries old process of Japanese woodblock printing, this course uses traditional tools to create modern masterpieces. Inspired by the semi-abstract modernist tradition of St Ives, practitioner Adrian Holmes teaches you to compose, carve and print your own designs using authentic Japanese tools and paper.

Practitioner Adrian Holmes gives you an insight into his extensive knowledge of the woodblock printing tradition. Having lived and practiced woodblock printing in Japan for many years, he journeys there each year to continue his personal study of the art and the sosaku hanga movement that emerged in the 20th Century, around the same time as British modernism was taking off.
Translated literally as ‘creative prints’, sosaku hanga emphasises the artist’s need for autonomous self-expression in the drawing, carving and designing of prints. This remains a major appeal of woodblock printing today: it’s an independent printing process that you can do at home, without a press and using completely sustainable materials.

This course offers a contemporary take on woodblock with traditional methods and tools that have been used in Japan for centuries. Exploration will include a trip to the Barbara Hepworth Gardens and its simple and shapely sculptures inspired the rocks and lines of the Cornish coast.
Learn to extract modern ideas from your surroundings and simplify them into semi-abstract designs – knowledge you can use in any creative endeavour. Enjoy the satisfying process of carving your designs into soft poplar ply and hone your compositional skills creating clean prints with a precise and professional finish.
This is a wonderfully unique opportunity to engage with traditions from both Japan and St Ives to produce ethereal, experimental prints.

Experience: Any

Asa Gohan @ Terrace Gallery

Asa Gohan is Adrian's first show with Terrace gallery.

'Asa gohan is the Japanese for Breakfast'

Adrian has been working on this series of still life woodblock prints throughout lockdown, taking his inspiration from a fascination with both Sosaku Hanga (Japanese creative print movement) and the Naïve art movements. Adrian aims to pay homage to these two significant art genres through a lively collection of wonky fruit-based woodblock prints.

"This is still very much an evolving body of work. I want the work to be playful, bold and unassuming. I love the honesty of both primitive and naive arts, and this is key to shaping my work. I am committed to the spontaneous, and let the paper and plate control the decisions. This unformatted and intuitive style of working fascinates me, and in turn, offers me a chance to play which is essential to creativity.

Adrian's naturally cheery, lighthearted work is perfect for inducing a moment of respite from these dark times and hopefully will bring a smile or two to the faces of its admirers.

Master Carver Motoharu Asaka Woodblock Print Workshop

A very Special guest

I am pleased to announce that Master woodblock print maker Motoharu Asaka will be visiting studio 115 at Krowji. He will lead a one-day workshop in the beautiful craft of Moku-Hanga.

Join woodblock print maker Adrian Holmes @ Studio 115 for this a rare opportunity to be taught by Japanese woodblock Artist Motoharu Asaka

During this one day workshop you will create your own small woodblock print using traditional water-based Japanese woodblock printing techniques.
Learn from a master ukiyoe carver who has studied in a tradition stretching back 400 years. Motoharu Asaka is one of a handful of people left who are traditionally trained in this craft. This is a rare opportunity to learn master skills and try woodblock printmaking for yourself.
Asaka apprenticed for 17 years, but you can pick up the basics in this intensive workshop!

Asaka will be accompanied by Louise Rouse, adjunct professor in the art program at Temple University, Japan. She will interpret into English. If you require interpretation into another language please contact us to arrange.

This workshop is receiving funding from the European Social Fund as part of the Cultivator project and will be free. Places are limited to 8 participants. Due to the huge interest for this workshop places will fill up very quickly so apologies if you don’t get a spot this time.

Penryn Arts Festival: Woodblock printing workshop & meal with Adrian Holmes

Penryn Arts Festival
Date and Time
Mon 6 November 2017

      18:00 – 21:30 GMT

After a short break in 2016, Penryn Arts Festival is back celebrating the creative spirit that lives in Penryn’s community and the artisanal skills that are flourishing in the town and the wider area. To reflect this we are taking a new approach and instead of the usual 3 day festival there will be a programme of events, workshop and screenings in across Penryn from October – December.

Each event will explore a different aspect of making and craftsmanship: revaluing haptic reasoning, local historical connotations and connections to making, as well as the subversion of ancient methods and traditions through contemporary art.

This years festival is run by Field Notes; which is the collaborative practice of Cornwall based curators and producers, Cat Bagg and Rosie Thomson-Glover.
